20 Ways You Can Help an Author

Over the years, I've been blessed to have very awesome fans who have done a number of things to help me in my career, besides buying my books. Many of my readers have followed my journey from the first book to my most recent one, and I'm often asked by these very generous people, "What can I do to help you?"

Today I'm going to share with you some of the ways you can help me--and other authors.
                  1. Tell your friends and family about the author and his/her work. Word of mouth creates buzz and excitement. Any time you read a good book, let people know.
                  2. When an author's book comes out, promote it on your Facebook, Myspace, Twitter networks. You can often share one of the author's posts directly from his/her blog by using share buttons. Mention how much you look forward to this author's latest work.
                  3. Pre-order the book as soon as it's available for pre-orders. That shows everyone there is a demand for it. It also could result in extra promotion for the author as publishers get excited when they see solid early sales.
                  4. If you miss the pre-order sale, buy the author's book on launch day or during the first 6 weeks. Early sales often determine whether an author gets shelf space at a store and whether she's offered another book contract. The last thing an author wants is to see books being returned.
                  5. Suggest that your friends and family buy it on launch day too. Send them a link to the buy page of their favorite retailer.
                  6. Buy extra copies for gifts, even if Christmas is 6 months away. If you're giving ereaders as gifts, load them with books by your favorite author. Once they're done reading them, your friends can create their own account and upload their choices.
                  7. Buying the author's book from could result in an early bestseller; however, so can buying through various bookstores and other online retailers. When in doubt, you could always ask the author if they have a preference; often they'll post links on their website. Or you can support your local independent bookstore. You can always ask the store if they report on bestsellers to any of the newspapers.
                  8. Don't read pirated book and don't pirate them yourself. Don't accept free copies from any website unless it's from the author or a respected book retailer. Pirating is theft of the author's copyright. Someone has created a file that is being uploaded for free, and the author does not benefit from this in any way. If you really want to read an author's work, have the decency to pay for it.
                  9. Ask your local libraries to order in copies of the author's book.
                  10. If appropriate, suggest it to your town's schools. Also, suggest appropriate books as gifts for students at the end of the year or for awards.
                  11. If you know anyone in a book club, suggest that they buy the author's book for their next pick.
                  12. If you enjoy the book, review it. Reviews do help sell more books and authors are always very happy to find a review posted on Amazon, Chapters, Barnes and Noble, Smashwords, Goodreads, Shelfari, LibraryThing, your blog and other review sites. Plus you'll make the author's day when he/she reads your review.
                  13. Add the author's blog to your blogroll, if you have one. Add the author's website link to your website and blogs.
                  14. Blog about the author and his/her work. Or invite the author to submit a guest post. Most won't turn you down. I know I won't. If you want me to visit your blog and write something for you, just ask me.
                  15. Interview the author for your blog or website. Again, most authors won't turn you down, especially mid-list and newer authors or those published by smaller publishers.
                  16. If you know of an event that could benefit from having the author visit and speak, let the event organizers know. Most authors enjoy visiting
                  17. If you have contacts in the film industry and think the author's book would make an awesome movie, let your film contacts know. Send them a copy of the book.
                  18. Nominate the author for any national or local awards she may qualify. Not just literary awards but "Woman of Vision" or "Man of the Hour" kinds of awards. Also do the literary award nominations. Often you can find these by googling "awards" and your city, province or state.
                  19. I've even had fans contact publishers on my behalf, asking that they publish my novels. One contacted a large print publisher to request large print editions of my books. Though nothing has come of this yet, I am very grateful that this reader did this. In the book industry, an author never knows when something will "click" and then great things happen.
                  20. Keep reading the author's books. Make a point of looking for his/her books. Read his/her backlist and new releases. If you enjoy an author's work, buying their other titles is one of the best ways to let them know.
I am so very grateful to all my readers, for their loyalty and interest. Without them, I only have words on paper.I strive with every book to create something intriguing and different, and I hope you'll always keep reading. Thank you.

Biography of romantic suspense author Cherish D'Angelo

When romance author Cherish D'Angelo is not busy relaxing in her hot tub, sipping champagne, eating chocolate-covered strawberries or plotting romantic suspense with scintillating sensuality, she is ruthlessly killing people off in her thrillers as bestselling Canadian suspense author, Cheryl Kaye Tardif.

Cherish's debut romance, Lancelot's Lady placed in the semi-finals of Dorchester Publishing's "Next Best Celler" contest and went on to win an Editor's Choice Award from Textnovel. Currently living in Edmonton, Alberta, she enjoys long walks on the beach, except there aren't any around so she has to make do with trips around the hot tub or a vacation to a tropical paradise. And margaritas.

Guest blog: Author James M Turner talks about his latest book, Beyond the Comfort Zone

Today I'd like to welcome author and screenplay writer James M Turner to talk about his latest book 'Beyond the Comfort Zone'.

Hi Cheryl and thanks for inviting me here to talk about my book.

James, can you explain a little about what your book is about?

Beyond the Comfort Zone is a memoir, eighty percent of which takes place in Asia. Having enjoyed a career as a professional musician for the rich and famous, in 2002 I moved to south east Asia where I eventually became aware of the child trafficking trade. Together with an acquaintance and the help of a US organization we attempt to gain the confidence of the traffickers and bring them to justice – saving the cargo in the process. There is a little bit in there about those wild and crazy days travelling the world as a high paid musician, but this is really just a backstory that makes the subsequent adventure in Asia all the more remarkable.

It's a tale that follows two young men trying to do the right thing and in the process nearly losing themselves as they spiral downwards into a shadowy world where human lives, at least their lives, are worth nothing. There is danger, intrigue, high emotion and a fragile love story woven together in what one reviewer called ' an exceptional journey ...the making of a Hollywood blockbuster, in short a Shantaram for South East Asia.'

What is the essence of this story?

The essence of 'Beyond the Comfort Zone' can probably be summed by this extract from the dust jacket.

"Beyond The Comfort Zone is the remarkable true story of one man's extraordinary journey, from the stages of the world to the jungles of south-east Asia. As one of the UK's premier session musicians James M Turner led a life most only dream about, playing Saxophone with some of the world's best selling artists and travelling the globe performing to legions of adoring fans. So, as he stood on stage at Wembley Stadium, raised his Sax and 70,000 people screamed into the night air, he could have been forgiven for thinking that his life would always be this way. A few short years later however he would find himself deep in The Golden Triangle, fighting for his sanity and survival as he attempts to infiltrate and capture those engaged in the tearful trade of Human Trafficking."

It's very gratifying that reviewers and reader have picked up on the fiction like narrative as although it is a true story it does read like a good novel. Sometimes, real life can be a lot stranger than fiction.

Amazon, both US and UK editions, has BTCZ with only 5 star reviews. That must be very humbling. Why do you think it's done so well with reviewers?

It is very humbling indeed that people would take the time to do that. I also receive a lot of email from overseas. I think the book is resonating with people because, of course, the subject matter tugs the heartstrings. But also this is a very heartfelt account of two young men who almost lose themselves in the chaos of this world they have entered. Entered with the intention of doing the right thing.

Please share some reviews with us.

"Will grip you from start to finish. If you’re looking for a unique read, full of interest, intrigue, danger, and high emotion, then this is the book for you."

"His exceptional journey is the making of a Hollywood blockbuster and at times I had to remind myself that it’s a true story....[...] ...Turner’s dialogue leaps off the page."

                  A selection from Amazon – 100% 5 Star reviews:

"If you like to read a book that grips you from start to finish buy this book!"

"Beyond The Comfort Zone is among the best, and certainly the most engrossing, non-fiction books I have read in a long time. One of the strongest compliments I can pay is that while being entirely believable and hyperbole-free, it reads like fiction, and tightly written, exciting fiction at that. [...]..a superb read"

"I could have been following characters in a good novel rather than real people. I was gripped to the end and disappointed when it finished. Roll on a sequel!"

"Without wishing to give the story away, I will just say that this is a superbly crafted book and awesome memoir that will take your nerves right to the wire."

                  About James:

James M Turner is an author, composer, musician and screenwriter. Having had a successful career as a highly paid professional musician, he now works in the film industry. His first T.V. series screenplay, working title 'The Taker' is currently in development and will hopefully move into production later in 2010.

Guest Blogger: Author Marian Allen shares her thoughts on the long road to publicity

As part of her blog tour for her novel Eel's Reverence, author Marian Allen is visiting "The suspense is killing me" and I know she has some valuable advice to share. Welcome, Marian.

                  The Long Road To Publicity

I think of EEL'S REVERENCE as my first real novel. I decided to write a novel when I was in junior high--or maybe high school. At any rate, let's just say I wasn't a child prodigy. The world should give me a medal for not saving a copy of that monstrosity.

After that thing, I wrote a gothic romance with a male lead character who didn't have a romance. I've rewritten that book multiple times and now like it very much, and I think (fingers crossed) it's found a publisher.

Meanwhile, after the gothic, I took the time to go to some workshops and I joined a writers group (I still belong to it--the Southern Indiana Writers Group).

In the early 1990s, I wrote three books which I placed with electronic publishers. Back then, "electronic publishing" meant that people ordered the books through the mail and received 5 1/4 floppy disks with the books on them.

My first electronic publisher quit the business. My second one did well for me at first, but sales dwindled. A couple of years ago, I retrieved my rights to the three books and submitted them to Echelon Press, which accepted all three for re-issue.

I'm currently on a blog book tour for EEL'S REVERENCE and previewing FORCE OF HABIT, which is due out in November--and thank you for hosting me!

So what was the difference between my first two publishers and Echelon?

Echelon is a good publisher, but those two were also good publishers. All three houses had/have close working relationships with their authors, all three did/do everything they could/can to make noise for their authors. So what's the difference?

I would like to say that the only difference is that the other two were way ahead of their time. I would like to say that the other two had some flaws that Echelon doesn't have, or that Echelon has some attitude or clout that the other two didn't have.

But here's what I think is really the difference: Echelon has a different author.

Since the time I retrieved my rights, I've done quite a bit of research on the ebook market. I've joined marketing email lists. I've read marketing blogs and books. I've taken a blog book tour class and I've studied other writers' blogs and techniques. I've learned how to build a professional blog and, I hope, use it effectively. I've put up inexpensive or free short stories on Kindle and Smashwords to use as promotional items. I've sold short stories to anthologies and taken those to signings, and have volunteered to sit on panels at conventions and workshops.

I expected my previous publishers to do most of my publicity for me, and thought all I had to do was notify my hometown newspaper and all my friends and relations, "Here I am! Come and buy!" Echelon benefits from my having done a little wising up.

Takeaway advice: If you want a good publisher, don't just be a good writer; be a good author.

                  EEL'S REVERENCE

When elderly priest of Micah, "Aunt" Libby, goes on a Final Wandering, she's accosted and then befriended by an amphibious mugger. The area known as The Eel is infested with worse than minor criminals--it's under the thumbs of a coalition of greedy, brutal priests. Aunt Libby is a frail barrier to stand between peace and violence, and the worst violence may not come from her enemies...but from her friends.

EEL'S REVERENCE is available from OmniLit and Amazon's Kindle Store.

Whale Song: "a very touching/heart warming book"

Here is the last critique or book review I received from a student at ESC Trillium. Robyn's class studied Whale Song for their English novel study.
After I read Whale Song in my grade 11 class let me tell you that it wasn’t what I expected at all. I believe it was an appropriate time to read this book because my age group is probably the most difficult time for anyone, even though any age could read this book. Honestly the cover made it seem like the book wouldn’t of been what it turned out to be. It was a very interesting book.
You know how some books you need to read a few chapters before it to starts to get interesting? Well Whale Song caught my attention the second I started reading it. I just loved the fact one of the main points was about native legends. I would recommend this book to the people who are able to read. I think anyone would like this book because it’s about situations that everyone can go through.
From someone who just wants to read a book to pass time or someone that’s going through a difficult time, it’s a good option. By reading this you can learn a variety of things such as the native culture and their legends, bullying, killer whales, etc. This novel is a very touching/heart warming book so before I strongly suggest anyone to read it I warn you that you might cry. More than once. --Robyn
Robyn, I really appreciate your review and your warning to readers. I agree; they may need a small box of Kleenex when reading. ;-)
